MagnaCut: An American-made supersteel

The Kline represents our first use of MagnaCut, a new EDC-specific powdered metallurgy steel designed to be ultra corrosion resistant and extremely durable. MagnaCut is the product of Larrin Thomas, a self-professed knife nerd and the guy who actually wrote the book on blade steel engineering. He's dedicated his career to the study of blade steels and their properties. Your blade is the heart of your knife, and the properties of blade steels vary widely. Larrin's mission was to create a new EDC steel that would tackle a classic issue: how do you get the corrosion resistance of a stainless steel with the toughness and durability of high carbon steels? MagnaCut was his answer, and we are proud to bring it to the TJB line for the first time with the Kline.

The Best of Both Worlds.

"MagnaCut has the corrosion resistance of stainless steels, but with the performance characteristics of a traditional high-carbon steel."

- Larrin Thomas, MagnaCut creator and author of "Knife Engineering"

DESIGNED TO GET THE JOB DONE

Made in the USA.

We know that for a lot of people buying products made in the USA is important. It's important to us too, and we're making commitments to make more products here in the States. The Kline is our second USA-made knife, and there are more coming in the future. We are proud to produce the Kline domestically, and we'll continue to expand the products that we make close to home. Stay tuned for more USA-made products in 2023.

The TJB Workhorse.

We've listened to a lot of requests for a larger, more full-bodied knife that was designed to do tough jobs that might be outside the scope of a lighter-weight EDC folder. That's where the Kline came from. It's the knife you've been asking us to make: USA-made, MagnaCut blade steel, Micarta scales, an ambidextrous design and a larger form factor. This is a knife that we are really proud of and we know you're going to appreciate it as well. The Kline will be there for you when you need it most.

Returned

Ergonomics: The handle is very awkward for someone like me with medium/large hands as the index finger is too far away from the blade. You can pinch the blade for more precise cuts but I think shortening the distance between the blade and where the index finger sits would fix this. Also, the thumb stud could be a couple mm closer as well but then it might ruin the ramp/jimping. Personally, I’d be ok with no ramp/jimping for a more clean aesthetic and no hot spots.

Blade/steel: the MagnaCut steel with a beefier drop point is great, no issues there. Kind of reminds me of the old drop point loveless fixed blade designs which is a HUGE plus in my book. My favorite part of this knife.

Hardware/clip: nothing much to say, it’s flush. I haven’t carried it outside as I opted to return the knife. The concerns I’ve read online is that the micarta tends to wear around the screws and lead to the clip moving around.

Conclusion: I had to return this knife. The handle was too awkward for me… maybe for a person with smaller hands it would work but I’ll stick to fixed blades for 3.5” knives. Also, 2 stars for using usps

Significant blade play

It is a very lightweight and smooth knife with a great blade. It has a very smooth action. I like the clip, though it feels a little flimsy.

My biggest grievance is the significant amount of blade play/lock rock. The knife initially was delivered significantly off-centered too. The James Brand was exceedingly accommodating in sending me two replacements, but after the significant blade play on the third knife that I received, I decided to just request a refund.

For a knife close to $400, there should be no off-center blade and no blade play whatsoever. I expressed this concern to the James Brand, who again was exceedingly accommodating. Their customer support is five star, but the quality of the knife/quality control/workmanship leaves a little to be desired. Unfortunate, as I really liked the design and look of this knife.

Beautiful Knife with Ergonomic Issues

The Kline is great-looking and beautifully constructed knife, but it has a critical ergonomic flaw with the handle design. The end of the handle closest to the blade has a large bump-out that acts almost like a guard on a sword. The effect is that the grip position is moved away from the blade, causing a loss of leverage and control. This, combined with the lack of a choil and the flat-sided handle (vs. the more anatomical shape of the Carter XL) causes the knife to feel floppy and imprecise – and this is in a larger than average hand. As much as I liked the overall package, this lack of control was a deal-breaker for me. This seems like an obvious design flaw (or set of flaws). I would be interested the hear the rationale for this shape.
